Lanterns nowadays are not the ones we would usually think of as the ones we use to light up a dark room. Those are the lanterns described as candles placed inside glass flasks to protect the light from putting away. Well those are the lanterns that were known from the olden times.

If lighted up with proper precaution, flying these lanterns will indeed be a safe one.
